My very first year as a kindergarten teacher was spent in a classroom across from Helen’s kindergarten classroom. She taught me a lot of valuable things. Her children’s book collection inspired me, and she happily shared anything I needed; she gave me some good advice. She grew up in an era when boys and girls used completely separate entrances at what was once her high school...Norwood Middle School. She was an inspiration for many of us teachers—-having been a career woman early in her life, having taken a decade away from teaching to be a stay-at-home mom to her boys, and having returned to the classroom to finish out her career. She never gave up on anything. Her soft-spoken voice was incredibly soothing to children, and she was at her very best and happiest, I think, when reading to them. A little crowd of children surrounded her as she showed them the pictures and read out the stories. Sometimes, she would let her voice become very quiet at just the right places...all children would lean in, like she was telling them a very good secret. I will forever remember Mrs. Simonton, and I will miss her. 💕
