James Wallace Hengelbrok

d. November 19, 2017

HENGELBROK, James Wallace "Jim," 96, was called home to be with the Lord November 19, 2017. Born in Newport, Kentucky, to Edwin J. and Helen Costigan Hengelbrok, Jim grew up in Fort Thomas and graduated from Covington Latin School and Xavier University.

Named for his great-grandfather James Wallace, a U.S. Army Veteran in the Civil War, and his uncle James Wallace Costigan, a U.S. Marine killed in action at Belleau Wood in World War I, Jim answered the call of duty after the outbreak of World War II by enlisting in the Army. He fought with distinction in the Battle of the Bulge, and used his German language skills in the de-Nazification efforts during post-war occupation of Berlin and surrounding areas. In 1946 he married the love of his life, Mary Louise Hosty Hengelbrok, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School and embarked on a long legal career in which he developed an expertise in virtually every area of the law, and practiced law until well into his 80's. Mary Louise and Jim had three children and were devoted parents who instilled a love of God, family and country. They spent many happy years traveling the world, as well as many treasured family vacations in Leland, Michigan.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Mary Louise; his daughter Susan Haag (Jim) and son Tom in Cincinnati; his son James W. Jr. (Mary) in Tampa; and by his grandchildren Michael, David and Tim Hengelbrok in Tampa; Lara Hengelbrok in Seattle and Anne Haag in Chicago. Visitation at St. Boniface Church, 1750 Chase Ave., Northside, Tuesday, November 28, 2017, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Honor Flight Tri-State Headquarters, 8627 Calumet Way, Cincinnati, OH 45249. "Well done, good and faithful servant, come share your Master's joy."
