Rev. Harold "Chappie" Chapman

October 5, 1930 — June 15, 2018

Rev. Harold (“Chappie”) Chapman

Chappie woke up on the shores of Heaven, Friday morning, June 15, 2018. He lived a good long life in excellent health and then bravely battled cancer for the last six months. He was joyful, positive and optimistic to his last breath. He chose to have his body donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Born on October 5, 1930 in Brant Lake, New York, to Howard and Lucy Chapman, he was the middle child of seven.  He grew up in various towns and cities in the Adirondacks where his father was a minister. He attended Houghton College, in New York where he met Marybelle Bennett. They were married in 1953 after he served a year as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. They have five children:  Howard (Judy), Timothy (Jean), Daniel (Ali), Glenn (Heather), and Robyn (Ted) Russell; 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.  Chappie is also survived by his sister, June Hartman of Dalton, Mass, and his brother Donald Chapman of Hernando, Florida.

Chappie will be missed by many people in the far reaches of the world.  He was ordained as a pastor in the Wesleyan Methodist Church.  In 1959 he went to Sierra Leone, West Africa where he was a science teacher and high school principal.  He earned a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1963.  He was a high school administrator in Hilton, NY, from 1966 to 1974.   He then returned to the ministry, transferring his ordination to the Presbyterian Church (USA).  He served the Presbyterian church of Glendale, CA, and from there was on the staff of College Hill Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati.  In 1982 he was called to be the pastor of the Ma’adi Community Church in Cairo, Egypt.  After this he was the pastor of the American Church of Antwerp, Belgium, from 1990 to 1996.  Chappie returned to College Hill after his retirement.  He was active in the Presbytery of Cincinnati, Christ’s Community of College Hill, the Ministerium, and became a positive spokesman for Ohio Living Llanfair.

A celebration of Chappie’s life will be held on Saturday, June 30, at College Hill Presbyterian Church.  Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., the service at 1:00 pm followed by a brownie and ice cream reception.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to College Hill Presbyterian Church to Chappie’s Memorial fund for Social Justice.  Condolences at hodappfuneralhome.com
