Walter C. Howland

March 26, 1924 — November 19, 2017

HOWLAND, Walter C., long-time resident of Finneytown, passed on November 19, 2017, in his 94th year. Preceded in death by his wife Shirley D. Howland, parents Karl and Esther and sister Shirley. Born in 1924 in Rumford, Maine. Survived by three sons: Clark (Patricia), John and Bruce (Diana). Grandfather to Danny, Tom, Jessica (Josh) and Christopher (Kelly). Great grandfather to McKenna and Matthew.

Walter grew up living in various locations in the northeast where he learned to play hockey and ski. He was especially good at ski jumping. In high school, Walter played trumpet in several big bands. Walter enlisted in the Army after Pearl Harbor and served in the 15th Infantry, 3rd Division having fought in North Africa, Anzio, Italy and into France. Afterwards he enrolled in Indiana University where he was elected President of the Senior Class of 1949. Walter moved his family to Cincinnati from Detroit and in 1962 started General Advertising Products, which continues today under the leadership of son Bruce. Walter was loved by many employees who worked for him at GAP.

Walter and Shirley were long-time members of Clovernook Country Club, where he served as President of the Board of Directors, and were former members of East Lake Woodlands Country Club in Oldsmar, Florida. They both loved golf.

Walter and Shirley lived a great life, traveling to many locations around the world. They enjoyed raising their three sons and watching them compete in various athletic endeavors. They even traveled to Europe to watch Bruce play several games.

Walter and Shirley moved from Florida to reside in a cottage at Evergreen Retirement Community in 2007. In 2012, Walter suffered a stroke which took away his eyesight. He then lost his wife Shirley (married 66 years) in 2014. Walter will be missed by the many health care workers at Evergreen as well as residents of the facility.

A service to celebrate Walter's life will be held Thursday, November 30, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 703 Compton Rd., Finneytown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Assoc., 5211 Madison Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45227.
