Richard J. Schaech

On this, Father Carl’s 72nd birthday, I wanted to offer a tribute to him. I served with him at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral and at St. James, Wyoming.

Father Carl taught me so much by his wonderful example. He was “The Model Priest”. His hearty laugh, his angelic smile, his compassionate ear and his brilliant intellect are just some of the attributes of this incredible, unforgettable man.

The last time that Father Carl and I spoke was on August 17, 2009 to
offer “belated” congratulations for his 47th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination. As was his usual practice, he asked about my Dad who was suffering from cancer. I asked him to pray for him and, as usual, he assured me of his prayers. Dad held Father Carl in the highest esteem also.

I was terribly heartbroken when I called back the following Monday to learn that Father Carl had taken a sudden turn for the worse. He had sounded so good on the phone just a week ago. However, I would never want to deprive this holy man of seeing the Face of Christ. I’m glad that Father Carl and Dad can share each other’s company and receive their heavenly reward for living just and holy lives in the service of the Lord and His Holy Catholic Church. And, what more fitting a place for Father Carl and Dad. They now see the Face of Christ…for they were the Face of Christ for me and for so many others.
