August A. Pfister III, known as “Gus” to his friends and family, was born August 30, 1942 to Mary (Campbell) and Lewis Pfister. He grew up in a large family in New York and Connecticut.
Gus served in the Coast Guard from 1966 to 1974 as a lighthouse keeper and ship’s engineer. After leaving the service, he studied mechanical engineering and worked in that field for the rest of his professional life. He enjoyed woodworking, making toys for his grandchildren and gadgets for his family, and volunteering for his community. Throughout his life, Gus was a consummate builder, always finding creative solutions to challenges and looking for a new project to tackle.
He was the husband of Suzanne Pfister, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage and who preceded him in death. Together they raised two children, Erica Pfister and Andrew Pfister (Laura Katzif). He was a devoted father and grandfather, taking delight in all his family’s accomplishments and interests.
Gus is survived by his eight siblings, two children, and four grandchildren. His warmth, optimism, and dedication to family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
