Carol Ann Freeberg

May 9, 1935 — May 20, 2026

Carol Ann (Johnson) Freeberg was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1935, and died in Monroe, Ohio on May 20, 2026, aged 91. She lived a rich life full of family, friends, travel, golf and bridge. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and beloved friend to many. Though we grieve with her loss, we are comforted knowing she’s been welcomed to heaven by husband, Jim Freeberg and the loving arms of Jesus Christ.

Jim and Carol met at Purdue University’s bowling alley. Jim was impressed with the tall Swede’s bowling prowess. Carol was attracted by the handsome Army Lieutenant, and they married six months later. During their fifty-seven-year marriage, they lived on base at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Polk, Louisiana; as civilians in Point Comfort, Texas; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and ultimately retired in Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. Anyone who knew her could not fail to notice her love of Tennessee sports, especially football, women’s and men’s basketball.

Carol was a force of nature. She made friends easily and kept in touch with some friends for decades. She loved volunteering and because of her organizational abilities, she was asked to step into many leadership roles. That’s how she became a Girl Scout troop leader, Constable of Elections, President of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Council and a member of the Board of Directors for Passavant Lutheran Retirement Centers. Carol stepped in to run a local newspaper when an editor couldn’t be found. She was also president and member of numerous golf leagues and bridge and card groups.

For her family and friends, she was a consummate hostess, superb cook and baker. She was the center of the Freeberg family Thanksgiving dinners and celebrations. Carol was the planner of trips, keeper of maps and chief navigator on family vacations. Her compassion and care for others was legendary.

She leaves a great void in our lives.

Carol Freeberg is survived by daughters Debra L. Freeberg, Vicki Huntington and her husband Mike, Linda Agans and her husband Tom; grandchildren Amy and Andy Ehlers; Jessica and Josh Calo; Richard and Sarah Agans; Krystle Agans and Gabe Kraus; James Agans and Annika Aleski. Seven great-grandchildren call her GiGi:, Penny, Brooklyn, Laxton, Torrin, Amaiyah, Otis, and Blair.

She is survived by her sister Beverly Loitz, In-laws Fred Freeberg and Kay Freeberg and nieces and nephews: Robert and Melissa Freeberg; Kathy and Ken Kramp; Barbara Larsen; Cynthia Bovyer; Charles Freeberg; Fran Freeberg and Jay Powell; Jeff and Debbie Loitz; Jennifer and John MacAnally. She was a member of Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church and former member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Tennessee.
