Dorothy Elizabeth Compton (Rumpke)

Dorothy E. Compton died April 14, 2026, at the age of 89. She had many roles in her life, devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, but none more important than devoted wife and loving mom. Her Catholic faith was also primary to the person she became. She was a woman of faith and prayer.

Dorothy is survived by her loving children: Charles (Ruslyn) Compton; David Compton, Dianne (Mike) Biehl, Michael (Joni) Compton, Barbara (Ken) Yoder and Carolyn Brown; also, her dear grandchildren: Michael, Margaret, Marion, Toria, Laura, Katie, Nathan, David and 12 great-grandchildren. Also, by many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband of 45 years, Charles J. Compton, her two grandchildren: Eric and Brittany, her son-in-law, Reid, also her siblings, Albert Rumpke, Edward Rumpke, Virginia Ollinger, Herman Rumpke, Robert Rumpke, Ray Rumpke and Sr. Marianna Rumpke, S.N.D.

Dorothy was born, the youngest child of Herman and Mary Rumpke, into a bustling household with seven siblings. Having lost her dear dad at the young age of 13, she was very close to her siblings and especially her mother. She lost her mom shortly before her wedding to Charles. She remained close to her brothers and sisters, they made a practice of gathering monthly for a meal and conversation at “Rumpke Club”. This tradition lasted their whole lives. She and Charles started a life together in Carthage, raising six children in a small home where they were loved, protected and learned the art of forgiveness and compromise. Just as she had, they all attended Mass and school at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Carthage. Dorothy and Charles were very proud of their children, who all made their way in the world and of their amazing grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Charles loved to travel, they also enjoyed a quick getaway trip, sometimes waking up on a Saturday morning and going to the Smokey Mountains. Their adult children at home would wake up to find a note that they were off on an adventure! Dorothy continued to love visiting the Smokey Mountains and traveling until she couldn’t, which was surprisingly recent. Dianne and she made a practice of going there every year for a long weekend.

Dorothy’s life was long and full of love. She was the eternal optimist and always had a smile and a cheerful word to say. She was a cheerleader and sounding board for her children and her hugs were strong and conveyed her love. We’re going to miss those hugs.
