Harold G. Schuler, age 85 of Cincinnati, OH, passed away peacefully on April 18th, 2026.
Born in 1941, Harold lived frugally while displaying a generosity of spirit towards his family, church, and chosen charities. He was a disciplined man who loved a routine and lived by the motto “everything in moderation.”
As such, he enjoyed his time in the military, although it led him to swear off both camping and airplane travel for the rest of his life. Harold enlisted in the Army in 1961, serving on active duty until 1964. He was honorably discharged in 1967. GI Bill funds allowed him to be the first member of his family to earn a college degree. He attended night classes in engineering while working on a survey crew. After graduation, he worked as an Engineering Tech at the Cincinnati Water Works for 31 years. For most of that time and into retirement, Harold enjoyed golfing and bowling with some of his co-workers, the self-proclaimed “Monday Night Gang.”
One of Harold’s only regrets in life was that he didn’t play more baseball. To make up for that fact, he gave a great amount of focus towards playing fantasy baseball on Scoresheet. It must be said that Harold was a Reds fan his whole life.
In addition to his other leisure pursuits, Harold served as the Commander of his American Legion post for many years and was heavily involved in his church. He could be found at St. Clare’s Parish multiple days a week assisting with mass and changing the church sign.
In May of 2025, Harold moved to Knoxville, TN to live with his daughter, Jen Schuler Schappel, and his grandchildren, Audrey and Coen Schappel.
Shortly after the move, he learned that his previously well-controlled lung cancer had spread to the bones of his spine. As a devoted father and grandfather, Harold wanted more time with his family and decided to undergo treatment for his cancer, despite his age and end-stage diagnosis. Over the course of eight challenging months of chemotherapy, Harold never complained about his lot in life and maintained his dry sense of humor. Through it all, he found solace in life’s simple pleasures: family, baseball, Elvis, and two fingers of Jack Daniels in the afternoon.
Harold will be remembered with a funeral mass on Saturday, June 13th at 11:00am at St. Clare’s Parish, 1443 Cedar Avenue, Cincinnati, OH, 45224. His cremains will be buried next to those of his parents, Helen and Harold J. Schuler, in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the pharmacy at St. Vincent de Paul, one of Harold’s favorite charities to support.
