James S. Vonderhaar, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at Hospice of Cincinnati. Born on June 20, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim’s life was marked by dedication to his family, community, and career.
A proud graduate of Roger Bacon High School in 1963, Jim went on to serve his country with honor in the Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972. His commitment to service was mirrored in his professional achievements, most notably as Senior Director of Business Technology for Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, where he contributed significantly to advancing healthcare technology.
Jim’s personal life was rich with love and cherished memories. He took immense joy in spending holidays surrounded by his family. Known for his pride in his immaculate yard (produced from riding his lawn mower in the lowest gear possible) and clean cars, Jim was also an avid supporter of local sports, passionately following the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Reds, and Cincinnati Bengals. His greatest happiness came from his role as a devoted grandfather to eighteen grandchildren and great-grandfather to two great-grandsons, finding great pleasure in attending their sporting events and celebrating their accomplishments.
On April 23, 2026, Jim and his wife Teresa R. Vonderhaar (Sand) celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, a testament to a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Teresa; his children Amy (Scott) Reed, James (Holly) Vonderhaar, Trisha (Davis) Graham, Jeff (Lisa) Vonderhaar, Becky (Shawn) Gallaher, and Maria (Jim) Costello. He leaves behind eighteen grandchildren—Justin Reed, Tyler Vonderhaar, Brandon Reed, Danny (Blake) Vonderhaar, Jimmy Costello, Jake Gallaher, Garrett Gallaher, Davis Graham, Adam Costello, Mary Grace Graham, Allie Gallaher, Ben Vonderhaar, Andrew Graham, Joey Costello, Katie Jo Gallaher, Sarah Graham, Emily Costello, and Chris Vonderhaar—as well as his two great-grandsons, Luke Reed and Hayden Vonderhaar.
Jim was preceded in death by his father Joe Vonderhaar, mother Thelma Vonderhaar (Schappacher), siblings Claire, Tom, Lou, Margie, and Mike, and other family members Harry & Mary Sand, Raymond Sand, and Jimmy Sand. He is survived by siblings Richard, Greg, Patricia, and Julie.
James S. Vonderhaar’s legacy is one of dedication, love, and community spirit. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him and forever remembered for the lasting impact he made through his family and career.
