Joel R. Smith, a loving husband, devoted father, cherished son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, in Blue Ash, Ohio. Born on February 2, 1966, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, Joel lived a life marked by kindness, strength, and an unyielding spirit that those who knew him will deeply remember.
Joel’s journey was one of exploration and connection. A graduate of Elgin High School in 1984 and Lincoln Technical Institute, he built a life grounded in knowledge and curiosity. His love for ancestry research revealed a passion for discovery and history, while his fondness for playing with Legos spoke to the childlike wonder and creativity that remained with him throughout his life.
Married to Bonnie Lynn (Brudzinski) Smith on September 16, 1989, Joel embraced the joys of family and companionship. Together, they welcomed their only son, Maksymilian Jozef Smith, born on October 18, 2011, a son who brought immeasurable happiness into Joel’s life. Joel’s love extended beyond his immediate family to his many nieces and nephews—eleven in number—whom he delighted in spending time with. His willingness to offer a helping hand was a defining trait, endearing him to all who crossed his path.
Joel’s adventurous spirit carried him far and wide. From the icy expanse of the Arctic Circle to the southern reaches of the Panama Canal, and eastward to “The End” at Montauk Point, New York, he embraced the thrill of travel with open arms. Throughout his life, he called many places home, including Illinois, Texas, Kentucky, and finally Ohio.
He was also deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America, embodying the values of leadership, service, and community. Joel’s personality was a unique blend of kindness and toughness, with a stubborn streak that showed his steadfast commitment to those he loved and the principles he held dear.
Joel is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Lynn; his cherished son, Maksymilian Jozef; his mother, Carolyn Barnes Smith; his sister, Victoria Smith (Bruce); his brothers, Scott Smith (Joan) and Chad Smith (Angel); and many nieces and nephews who treasured his presence. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Smith, and sister, Laura Rush.
Joel R. Smith’s legacy is one of heartfelt generosity, unwavering devotion, and a spirit that inspired those around him. He will be remembered not only for the places he traveled or the hobbies he pursued but for the profound impact he made on his family, friends, and community. His memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
