KERN, John (Jack) C. Kern, beloved son of the late Arthur and Mary Kern of Bellevue, KY. John (Jack) was a modern-day Renaissance Man. John knew much about everything. As a forever learner, he is a living lesson for all. His interests were Geology, German language and culture, History, Government, and Opera. He was a self-taught computer programming pioneer in the 1950’s and the 1960’s, a time when classes and degrees did not exist for this emerging technology. He moved to San Francisco in 1973 to head up the computer department for the City of San Francisco School district for 25 years. In 2016, John returned to Cincinnati to be near family and often stated 2 weeks in San Francisco was better than a lifetime anywhere else. He was a generous and kind man who, during his retirement, volunteered his time at St. Anthony’s Soup Kitchen and as an Information volunteer at the San Francisco airport. He was Mr. San Francisco and enjoyed being the travel ambassador for any friend or relative who visited San Francisco. He was a lifelong Reds fan who never stopped rooting for his Cincinnati home team even while residing in the land of the Giants.
He is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. He was a member of the US Air Force during the Korean War. He is the brother of the late Mary E. (Betty Kern) Kramer, the late Katherine (Katie Kern) Laker, the late Virginia (Ginny Kern) Krumpelman, and of the late William (Bill) Kern. Uncle of and admired by 14 Nieces and Nephews, 32 Great Nieces and Nephews, and 26 Great Great Nieces and Nephews. John passed away on Thursday February 5 at age 93.
