Marcus Kanoa Porter

Marcus Kanoa Porter, a kind, generous, and endlessly thoughtful man, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of technological innovation, musical passion, and deep, lasting friendships across the globe. Born on the island of O’ahu, Marcus began his life as a world traveler, accompanying his father's diplomatic career across Asia and Africa. This unique upbringing, which led to a humorous "utter disrespect for monkeys," also gave him a unique perspective. Later, in Northern Virginia, he attended George C. Marshall High School. It was here he discovered a love for singing and musical theater, and excelled in early computer classes, foreshadowing his future career. A transformative sophomore year was spent in Alaska with his father and stepmother, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the region's beautiful mountains and glaciers. Upon his return, he reconnected with a small group of fellow Gen Xers who would become his lifelong friends, including his first wife, Mixelle Beardsley. Marcus brought his voice and stage presence to the local community, notably giving a heartfelt rendition of "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" in a Vienna Community Center Players production of 1776, and later participating in local ensembles like the Georgetown Community Chorale. He returned to Alaska and worked for the railroad as a gandy dancer. Came back to the DC area and worked in retail, before alighting in IT. Developing a comedy horror based website led to romance and he moved to Ohio to join his life with Michelle Cline who became his second wife. In his professional life, Marcus thrived in the blossoming dot com industry, eventually rising to significance in the realms of system administration and domain architecture. However, his truest enthusiasm was for tinkering and the maker lifestyle, where he was an early adopter. Marcus never saw a problem, only challenges that could be addressed through thoughtful consideration and consultation. Mark Twain once said, "Great people are those who make others feel that they, too, can become great" and Marcus was this generous spirit. Exceptionally generous with his time, patient, and always willing to help, he embodied gentle kindness. He was full of love for his friends, who now mourn him across the world, including his dedicated Wednesday Night Dungeons and Dragons Group (Jack, Geordie, Aaron, John, and Janice). Among the greatest joys of his life was being a father to Fable, and grandfather to Nissa. His own wonder, joy and curiosity found its perfect pairing in their development. For all who knew Marcus, there is a profound sadness in his parting. Yet, his legacy is one of goodness. Reasonable beyond any expectation, he naturally embodied every personality attribute of a man always striving to be a good man, which is the highest praise any man can earn. Marcus was preceded in death by his mother Aniene, his sister Samantha, and his father Blaine and step-mother Thea.

He is survived by his beloved wife Michelle Porter, his daughter Fable Cline, his granddaughter Nissa Cline, his sister Maria X, and innumerable cousins, friends, and relatives whose lives he touched with his extraordinary presence.
