Marlene Julia Smith

September 7, 1945 — August 6, 2021

Marlene Julia Smith, 75, of Norwood, died peacefully on August 6, 2021. Marlene was born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Hoerst) Flory on September 7, 1945 in Great Bend, Kansas. She is survived by her four children Kevin (Trina Roberts) Caldwell, Kim (Doug) Caldwell-Theis, Todd (Angie) Caldwell, Chad (Shannon) Smith, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and her siblings George (Lillian) Flory, Dick Flory, Anita Ballew, Mike (Sue) Flory, Roy Flory, and Kathy (Rick) Staubach. Marlene is also survived by numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn Tripp, and brother-in-law Clell Ballew.

Shortly after Marlene’s birth, her father’s military service station brought the family back to Elmwood Place, Ohio. Throughout her childhood, she was always happy, friendly, joking, and enjoyed time with her friends. In 1963, she graduated from Our Lady of Angels High School and then entered the workforce.

Marlene’s life was dedicated to her four children. She was a hard worker who climbed her way up through the restaurant business. In November 1997, Marlene purchased Rusty’s Ristorante in Deer Park and began her adventures as a restaurateur. It was her second home and her customers were like family. Her restaurant was the location of numerous family events and celebrations until the closing of its doors and the beginning of her retirement in October of 2014.

Marlene enjoyed her retirement at her three-story Victorian home in Norwood, Ohio. Visits from family were always highlights in her day, especially when grandkids and great grandkids were in tow. Gardening was one of her favorite hobbies, and she made sure to share pictures of her most recent blooms and garden additions with everyone. Marlene was passionate about food, and she could always be found in the kitchen. Curiosity about recipes frequently drove her conversations. She had an eye for decorating, and her advice on daily life was always sought out. Marlene will be greatly missed by all.

A celebration of life will be held at Weller Park located at 10021 Weller Rd in Montgomery, Ohio on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to YWCA of Greater Cincinnati and Women Helping Women.
