Matthew Edward Grant, 66, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2026 following a twelve year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was a devoted father, husband, brother, and friend whose kindness and joy touched everyone who knew him. He was born on February 8, 1960 to June and Edward Grant in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the youngest of 5 children, and is survived by his siblings Ed, Tom, Bede, and Vera. In 1986, he married Kimberly O’Connell and is survived by his wife and three children, Stephanie, Allison, and Emily.
He graduated from La Salle high school in 1978 before attending University of Boulder and Miami University, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics. He also earned his pilot’s license at 17 years old. He later went on to earn a Master’s degree in Finance from Hardin-Simmons University in 1995 and a Master’s degree in War Studies from the US Naval War College in 2004. Matthew served for 22 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2007. He went on to work as a military business analyst at Northrop Grumman until his retirement in 2015.
Matt grew hops in his backyard and home brewed beer for nearly thirty years. He loved the outdoors and was an avid skier, runner, kayaker, cyclist, gardener, and fisherman. Matt completed many marathons and triathlons in his life. His family will forever cherish memories with him camping, traveling, sailing, and hiking with their dogs. Matt found joy in working with his hands woodcrafting, like his father before him, and on his beloved TR6 Triumph. He found peace in nature all the way through the end, spending weekends walking in the woods at the Ohio Veterans Home. Above all else, he treasured spending time with the people he loved. He built a life centered on family, friends, faith, and never taking things for granted.
He will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind. Even now with the Lord, his presence remains on Earth in every good memory and cherished moment spent in laughter, gratitude, and awe of all this life offers. Not a day will go by that he is not thought of and he will live on in every heart of those who love him.
