WIENER

Paul Edwin Wiener joined his beloved wife, Alice Lorraine Wiener (nee Allred), in heaven on February 14, 2017 at age 93. He was a devoted father to three children: Beth Brokaw of Louisville, KY; the late Blake Wiener of Schaumburg, Illinois; and Rebecca Ballinger ((Rusty) of Independence, KY. He will be missed greatly by three grandchildren: Rachel Kieltyka (Joseph), Quinn Ballinger, and Tess Ballinger.

Born and raised in Massillon, OH, Paul graduated from Washington High School in 1941; he was a Massillon Tiger at heart all of his life. After a brief period of employment with Republic Steel, he served in the U.S Army during World War II. He was attached to the Adjutant General’s department in New Guinea and later the Philippines. His final rank was Technical Sergeant.

Paul became a student at Cincinnati Bible Seminary in 1948 to prepare for fulltime Christian work and graduated in 1952 as Class Orator. At CBS he met his wife and became an ordained minister. From 1951 to 1956 he ministered with the Grape Grove Church of Christ in Jamestown, OH. He continued postgraduate studies in business at Wilmington College in Ohio.

Following a brief ministry with the Brightmoor Christian Church, Detroit, MI, he began working with Great Lakes Bible College to assist a financial drive to move their campus from Vestaburg, MI to Lansing and to join the administrative and teaching staff.

In 1963 Paul entered his ministry in the area of benevolence. In this ministry he found his true calling, merging his Christian faith with his business and administrative skills. Called by the Christian Benevolent Association to raise funds and promote the building of Mount Healthy Christian Home in Cincinnati, OH, Paul became the assistant administrator after the home was built.

First Christian Church in Canton, Ohio, invited Paul to become their administrator for an existing nursing home in 1969. After a year of administration, Paul, as well as others, convinced the church board that what was really needed was a residential facility that included nursing care. His vision was for a home for older persons to live in Christian community with graduated care as their needs became greater in later years. Rose Lane Nursing Home was sold to make way for a new project. In 1976 Canton Christian Home opened with Paul as the founding administrator. When the federal and state government required administrators to be licensed, Paul took classes, passed the licensure test, and was in the first class of administrators to be licensed in the State of Ohio.

Paul planned to retire in 1990 after 27 years in benevolent work. But when asked by the Canton Christian Home trustees, he delayed his retirement for 2 years and served as Project Coordinator for construction of a four story wing added to the original building.

After moving to Mason Christian Village in 1997 with his wife, Paul served as president of the Mason Christian Village Residents’ Association for 3 years and continued supply preaching when called upon. He was also a teacher for the Seeker’s Class of Christ’s Church at Mason.

Paul was included in the Christian Benevolent Association’s Hall of Fame for his outstanding work with the aging. He assisted churches with stewardship and capital fund drives in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois. He provided assistance for para-church organizations including: CBC&S (Alumni Hall), Great Lakes Bible College, the North American Christian Convention (treasurer for 2 years), and Round Lake Christian Assembly (women’s dorm.)

Beyond the work day and in his retirement years Paul enjoyed gardening, walking, bike riding, and traveling.

Visitation will be held at Mason Christian Village, 411 Western Row Road, Mason, Ohio 45040, on Monday, February 20 from 9:30 am until time of the funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will be at the Independence Cemetery in Independence, KY. Memorials may be sent to Cincinnati Christian University, Association for Benevolent Care, 2550 Cleveland Ave Nw, Canton, OH 44709-3306  or Christian Benevolent Association.
