Robert Stephen Canter (Steve), 71, of New Richmond, Ohio, passed away on June 4, 2025. Known for his warmth, humor, and big heart, Steve left a lasting impression on nearly everyone he met.
Born in Springfield, Ohio, Steve proudly served in the U.S. Army for seven years, showing the same dedication and loyalty in uniform that he carried throughout his life. After his service, he built a life rooted in family, faith, and community.
Steve brought energy and joy to everyday life. Whether cheering on the Reds, biking, or joking with his grandkids, he knew how to enjoy life and make others smile. Baseball games weren’t just about the sport—they were about being with the people he loved.
Together with his wife, Steve started and led a successful engineering firm, earning the respect of his employees, clients, and peers. He also enjoyed volunteering at City Gospel Mission, finding joy not only in serving others but in connecting with the people and fellow volunteers. Some of his most fulfilling moments were spent there alongside his grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cathy Canter. Together, they built a strong and loving home for their children: Micheline Moorhouse, Stephen Canter, and Ashley Mahler. His nine grandchildren, affectionately known as “Papa and Nana’s kids,” were his pride and joy. To them, he was more than a grandfather—he was “Papa,” a steady, loving presence full of laughter, stories, and unconditional love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Beulah Canter, and his brother Eugene. These losses helped shape his deep compassion for others.
More than anything, Steve will be remembered as a husband, dad, and Papa who was present, kind, and full of life. His memory lives on in the stories we share, the values he passed down, and the love he gave so freely.
