Robert Leon Cole

It is with profound respect and loving remembrance that we mark the passing of Robert Leon Cole, who departed this life on July 11, 2026, in Monroe, Ohio. Born on March 30, 1943, in Huttig, Arkansas, Robert's extraordinary journey wove together a deep commitment to family, an unyielding thirst for knowledge, and a steadfast devotion to others.

Robert’s intellectual curiosity was apparent early on, guiding him first to the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), where he earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science and History. This foundation was followed by further academic excellence at George Washington University, where he completed his Master of Arts in Government. These scholarly pursuits were not simply achievements—rather, they spoke to a mind ever eager to learn and to understand the world in which he lived.

Robert served his country with dignity and courage as a member of the U.S. Army, with deployment during the Vietnam War.

In his distinguished career, Robert worked in marketing research for Arbitron, RICI, and Noxell. He was respected not only for his expertise but for the warmth and consideration he extended to colleagues and associates alike.

Robert's personal life illuminated his truest gifts. He was a devoted husband to Mary for over 60 years, a role in which his tenderness and companionship found full expression - evidenced by many love letters. His identity as father and grandfather crowned his life with meaning, and he invested boundless love and pride in his sons, Kristopher and Kevin, and his grandsons: Joshua, Hayden, Parker, Gabriel, and Irwin. His joy in their accomplishments and his delight in their company enriched every family gathering with vibrancy and wisdom that will resound through generations.

Ever the conversationalist, Robert was renowned for his love of talking—each conversation with him was a journey through ideas, memories, and laughter. To know Robert was to feel listened to and valued, so caring was he toward everyone he encountered. His avid love for reading, and for sharing his finds with others, exemplified his belief in the power of stories and learning. A lover of music, he often found solace and celebration alike in his favorite melodies.

Outside the world of books and ideas, Robert found peace in gardening. He shared many adventures with Mary, traveling to new places, and, at home, he took great pleasure in helping her in the kitchen, ever ready to try new recipes and savor the joys of discovery through taste. These moments—simple, cherished, and deeply human—form a mosaic of a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son Kevin, his father L.D. Cole, and his mother Faye Cole. Their memories now join with his, entwined in the hearts of those who remain.

Robert’s legacy is one of deep affection and enduring devotion—a man whose gentle kindness, steadfastness, and intellectual passion have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him.

A service to honor and remember Robert Cole will be held. Details regarding the arrangements are available to those who wish to join in paying tribute to an extraordinary life.

In our mourning, we celebrate Robert—a man of heart, humor, and unwavering love. His presence will be dearly missed and his memory will continue to inspire those who carry his story forward.
