Sister Loraine Marie Peter, RSM (Mary Antonia) 94, a Sister of Mercy for 74 years, died April 19, 2026. Born in Cincinnati, she was the youngest of five siblings. A graduate of Our Lady of Cincinnati College and Xavier University, she ministered 26 years in elementary education in Cincinnati, Piqua and Cleveland, OH as teacher and principal. Sister Loraine showed deep compassion for people in need, especially her students, and she acted upon it, not only helping the individual, but sometimes bringing changes to the school. She did not hesitate to right a wrong.
Her second primary area of service was 23 years as Director of Communications for her community, the Sisters of Mercy, Cincinnati Province and South Central Regional Community. Gifted in writing, she created the InkLinks newsletter to be a means of connection across the community, and it became very popular among the Sisters. While people seldom remember what you say, they do remember how you treated them. Sister Loraine will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, appreciation of others, wild sense of humor, great stories, upbeat spirit, and deep love for her community, family and her God. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and “greats” and her Mercy community.
The arrangements are as follows: Monday April 27, Visitation, 4:00-6:30 and Funeral Mass, 6:30, both at McAuley Convent, 1768 Cedar Avenue, Cincinnati. Tuesday, April 28, 10:00 Burial, new St. Joseph Cemetery.
