Emblem

Thomas “Tom” L. Niewald, was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend who brought light and laughter to everyone around him. Tom passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on November 13, 1967, Tom lived his life grounded in kindness, integrity, and service. He faced every challenge with strength and optimism, inspiring everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Tom exemplified the qualities of a hard-worker and a good man. A lifelong learner and achiever, Tom earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Class of 1989. He later received his Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Management from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He dedicated more than 22 years to Valeo before finishing his career at GE Aerospace, where he took great pride in contributing to the future of flight. Tom’s commitment to his work was outmatched only by his loyalty to his country and his deep love for his family.

Tom served seven years in the U.S. Army as an Armor Officer, seeing combat during the Persian Gulf War. He was proud to mentor and lead American soldiers as a Tank Platoon Leader, Tank Company Executive Officer, and Tank Company Commander. His time in the service shaped his character and lifelong sense of purpose and discipline. It was during this period that he was exposed to the oil fires in the Middle East, leading to his later diagnosis and final fight. He faced that battle with the same courage and determination he brought to every part of his life.

Tom was not just a soldier or an engineer; he was a man with an innate ability to make others happy, embodying warmth, charm, and joy. He somehow knew the lyrics to nearly every song and often treated family and friends to spontaneous performances complete with his signature air guitar. His wonderful voice, unparalleled knack for story telling, and slightly cheesy dad jokes brightened countless days.

In his free time, Tom loved building and flying RC airplanes, discovering new IPAs, and spending time with his family. His kindness and empathy left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He had an extraordinary capacity for forgiveness and a genuine way of making people feel seen and valued.

Tom is survived by his wife, Marion; his children, Phillip and Katie; his mother, Nancy; and his brothers, Andy and Doug. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl. His family will carry forward the cherished moments they shared with him and his legacy of love, laughter, and strength.

Tom left this world with honor and dignity, surrounded by the people he loved most. His life was a testament to perseverance, integrity, and dedication. He leaves behind not just memories but a lasting impact that will resonate through the lives of everyone he touched. Tom Niewald was a bright light, and will continue to illuminate the paths of family and friends for generations to come. We will miss him beyond words, but we are endlessly grateful for the love, laughter, and lessons he shared with us. He was the definition of a Great American.
