Obituary

Timothy Mark Cavanaugh, affectionately known to many as “Digger,” died unexpectedly at the age of 58 in Ohio, where he had made his home for much of his adult life. Tim was a truly unique gift to those who knew and loved him. Bright, loving, funny, daring, adventurous, cantankerous, sarcastic, and caring are just a few of the words that describe him. He lived life on his own terms, made lasting friendships wherever he went, and brought laughter and light to the people around him.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, on November 4, 1967, while his father, John (“Jack”), was serving abroad as a teaching professor through a USAID program, Tim was raised in Durham, New Hampshire. He grew up loving the outdoors and all the adventures that came with it, from family camping trips and days at the beach to skiing and playing hockey at Jackson’s Landing and Mill Pond. A 1986 graduate of Oyster River High School, Tim excelled in both varsity baseball and hockey. It was also there that he forged some of his closest friendships. Those small-town bonds endured for decades, growing stronger with time and remaining an important part of his life.

Tim went on to attend the University of New Hampshire, earning a degree in Business Administration in 1990, before eventually pursuing graduate studies at the University of Missouri, where he earned a degree in Healthcare Administration. Afterward, he moved to the greater Cincinnati area and began a career in health care administration that would span the rest of his working life. Most recently, he served as Market Director with Healogics, partnering with St. Elizabeth Outpatient Wound Care Clinics.

While Ohio became home, family remained at the center of Tim’s world. Of all of his achievements, Tim was most proud of his role as father to his beloved daughter, Ella. She was the light of his life and he cherished any time they were able to spend together. In recent years, some of his happiest moments were trips to visit Ella at East Carolina University, where she is now a senior. He was immensely proud of the young woman she has become and watching her thrive and find happiness at college gave him tremendous joy.

Tim was also a devoted son to John (“Jack”) and Barbara (“Barb”) Cavanaugh and remained deeply grateful for their love and support throughout his life. Visits with his parents, particularly during their retirement years in Fort Myers, Florida, were always special. After Jack’s passing in 2009, Tim continued to be a loving and attentive presence in Barb’s life through her various transitions in retirement living and, more recently, full-time care. No matter the circumstances, Tim had a way of bringing a spark to his parents’ eyes and reminding them how deeply they were loved.

Tim shared a particularly close bond with his siblings, Sean and Kristin. Whether catching up during their frequent phone calls or traveling to see one another, they always found time for family, laughter, music, and the occasional beverage. He adored his nieces and nephews, Aidan, Carson, Lukas, and Sofia, and embraced his role as the sarcastic, quick-witted uncle who could always bring a smile to someone’s face. His humor was unmistakably Tim, and those who knew him well wouldn’t have wanted him any other way.

In more recent years, Tim found a wonderful source of love and happiness in his partner, Dovie Stiemetz. Their relationship brought renewed faith, a zest for adventure, and the joy of finding a true soulmate. Together, they shared a special connection that meant so much to Tim and brought a new sense of happiness to his life.

Tim is survived by his adored daughter, Ella Cavanaugh, and her mother, Carrie Patrick; his partner, Dovie Stiemetz; his mother, Barbara Cavanaugh; his brother, Sean Cavanaugh (Kelly Hathaway); his sister, Kristin Cavanaugh Magne (Matthew); his former wife, Lauren Sloan; his nieces and nephews; and his many lifelong best friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John Cavanaugh.

Tim was a flame gone out far too early. Yet the light he brought into the lives of his family and friends will not fade. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his irreverent humor, his fierce affection for those he loved, and the friendships that stood the test of time. He leaves behind countless memories, stories that will be told and retold, and a great deal of love.

Tim, you are loved, you are missed, and you will remain in our hearts forever.
