William J. Carpenter, affectionately known as Bill, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, in West Chester, Ohio, at the age of 96. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 22, 1930, Bill’s earliest years were shaped in the embrace of his grandmother, growing up in Mexico, New York. The warmth and resilience of those formative days would be reflected in every chapter of his long, remarkable life.

Bill was a proud graduate of Mexico Academy High School, where he first showed a curiosity for the world that never faded. In 1950, Bill answered the call of duty, serving with honor as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base. The years between 1950 and 1953 were not just a testament to his patriotism, but also to the sense of camaraderie and responsibility he carried into all areas of his life.

After his military service, Bill forged a respected career in semi-truck leasing, first with Saunders and later with Ruan. His good humor and diligence made him a valued colleague—a man who built not just business relationships, but friendships wherever he traveled.

A man of many passions, Bill found endless joy in ballroom dancing. It was through dancing that he met Rita, who would become his beloved wife and best friend. Together, Bill and Rita created memories lined with laughter and grace, the dance floor always an echo of the love they shared. As a father, Bill was never too busy to play, filling his home with laughter, playfulness, and steadfast love. This generosity of spirit shone brightly with his young son, creating countless moments of joy that still ring in the hearts of his family.

Bill’s imagination knew no bounds. He was a true train enthusiast—finding fascination in both roaring freight trains and the careful construction of model railroads. This hobby stoked his curiosity and connected him with others who delighted in the wonder of steam and steel. Those who knew Bill remember how easily he made friends, his jovial and imaginative nature drawing people in wherever he went. Always ready to help, to engage, or to share a hard-won pearl of wisdom, Bill embodied kindness. His openness and warmth ensured that friendship was never in short supply.

Above all else, Bill’s family was his greatest pride. The legacy he leaves resonates in the hearts and lives of his son Joey Carpenter and daughter-in-law Amelia Carpenter, and his cherished grandchildren: Aliena, Jimmy, and Nicholas Carpenter. Each life he touched carries forward his spirit of playfulness, imagination, and deep, unfailing love. Bill’s devoted wife, Rita Carpenter, who predeceased him, remains forever lovingly remembered alongside him.

The family will gather to celebrate Bill’s extraordinary life with gratitude for the lessons and laughter he gave so freely. As they mourn his passing, they also hold fast to the joy he brought into the world—remembering him not only as a loving father, grandfather, and husband but as a man whose life was a living example of joy, compassion, and the power of a generous heart.
