Doris Thornton Marks, born Jan. 8, 1922, died Nov. 9, 2010. She was the beloved only child of Irene (Ihn) and John Thornton. She is survived by her devoted children, Jeanette “Terry” Briscoe, John Stiller (Carol Goodwillie), and Doris Marks Callis (Marc Wavra); stepchildren, Mary Lou Marks Loyanich (Peter-Paul), Edward G. Marks (Anita), Jonathan Marks (Tova), Helen Marks Waits (Ernie), and Peggy Marks; grandchildren, Edge Briscoe, Billy Callis, Elizabeth Callis, Alexia and Travis Loyanich, Alison and Amy Marks, Rebecca and Jennie Waits; and great-granddaughter, Katie Briscoe. Doris was an accomplished artist, who generously shared her work with family, friends and charitable organizations. Doris believed in social, political and racial justice and worked selflessly for progressive causes. She espoused vegetarianism, opened her home to the needy and never turned away a stray animal. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her love of family. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Unitarian Universalist Church, 320 Resor Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45220 on Jan. 8, 2011 at 2 PM. Donations in her memory may be sent to PETA or Greenpeace.
