August 9, 1933 - June 27, 2020
Marie Marchetti King Johnson, 92, joined her beloved Lord Jesus while peacefully sleeping the evening of June 16, 2020 at Twin Towers Seniors Living Community in Cincinnati, OH. She is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, James Mussey Johnson, Jr., her daughter Devon King Lee (husband Karl), and grandchildren Kristina Lee, Kate Lee Noll (husband Robert), and Nathan Lee (wife Clara). She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Jenni Girella Marchetti and her sister Eleanor Marchetti Assante.
Marie was born in Uniontown, PA to Italian immigrant parents who owned and ran a small pastry business. She graduated with a BS in biology from Waynesburg University (Waynesburg, PA) and Masters in Biology from Miami University (Oxford OH). Known to her students as “Mrs. King,” she inspired generations at Wyoming High School (1964-1990) with her joy for life and learning in and outside the classroom. During summer breaks Marie took students on legendary six-week educational adventures to Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, South America and Hawaii. Many former students credit Marie with their decision to enter the medical field.
Following retirement, Marie and Jim resided in both Fairfield, OH and Cocoa Beach, FL. They traveled extensively in their private Cessna 182 including trips to Alaska and the Bahamas, often with family and friends. She adored spending time with her three grandchildren who knew her as “Nona” and are forever influenced by her love.
A public celebration of Marie’s life will be held at a future post-COVID19 time in the Wyoming, OH area. In her memory, the Marie King Johnson Memorial Fund has been set up through the Wyoming School Foundation to benefit the Science Department with the purpose of continuing Marie’s unique educational methodology of experiential classroom and field learning. Those who wish to donate may submit a check annotated Marie King Johnson Memorial Fund, and addressed to Wyoming School Foundation, 420 Springfield Pike, Suite K, Cincinnati, OH 45215.
