Beloved husband of Sheila Shafer (nee Dumont) for 32 years. Loving father of Jennifer (Paul) Beeson and Andrew Shafer. Dear son of Mary Shafer and the late Roger Shafer. Caring brother of Jeff Shafer.
Mark was originally from Elgin, IL, but graduated from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, MO. He then went on to graduate college from the United States Air Force Academy and proudly served 10 years in the United States Air Force working with the A10 Warthog and the C17 Globemaster. After a short year with GE Medical Systems, Mark moved to GE Aviation, where he spent the past 23 years.
Mark made the most of life, from staying active through golf, volleyball and bowling to trying all the different breweries Cincinnati has to offer. He maintained his fascination with planes from childhood through his adult life, never missing a flyby at a ball game. He enjoyed attending sporting events and supporting his hometown Cincinnati teams, but he maintained his loyalty to his original Chicago roots, including always being on the lookout for authentic Chicago dogs and Italian beef sandwiches. As a grilling master, he was the creator of Shafer’s Super Secret Savory Seasoning (S5), a family favorite. Mark was also a phenomenal trivia whiz, retaining and recalling enough random facts to win a game all on his own. While he accomplished a lot in his life, his greatest joy was his family, which was evident in the endless array of nicknames, the many years of coaching, and the meticulously planned family vacations.
Visitation will be held at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6410 Cincinnati Dayton Rd., Liberty Twp., OH 45044, on Friday, May 20, 2022, from 6-8 PM. Funeral Service will be held at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6410 Cincinnati Dayton Rd., Liberty Twp., OH 45044, on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery in Liberty Twp., OH.

Mark, our last conversation was about your family trip to the Bengals - Lions game and at no point did I doubt you would pull through. You always took my calls whenever I needed help to navigate a certain programmatic situation and for that I was extremely grateful to you. Hearing this devastating news is hard to comprehend, but it's difficult to fathom what your family is going through. My sincerest condolences to the Shafer family. Will continue to keep you all in my prayers.

Sheila and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Mark has been a friend and GE colleague for a long time. We've played many hands of cards over the years with Mark sometimes winning and sometimes losing - but always with a smile on his face. He always hosted our group in the month of December and your decorated house always put everyone in the holiday spirit. Wishing you all the best in these difficult times. Mark will be missed.

Dear Sheila. Jennifer, Andrew and Mary. My deepest sympathy and condolences and love for you all in this time as we remember Mark and what he meant to all of us. I've known Mark for at least 20 yrs from GE and was lucky enough to travel together when I was in MSO and we also became great friends outside of work. I will always cherish the times that we all played volleyball together and all of the trivia matches that we won because of Mark's great intellect. RIP Mark! Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, Still missed and very Dear. ~Irish Blessing.

Mark was an amazing human being. He was spontaneously funny. It is my pleasure to spend very little but quality time with him. Rest in peace.

Sheila and family, my heartfelt condolence to each of you. Mark and I worked together at GE for the last 3 years. It was a privilege to work with Mark, he brought great passion, enthusiasm, and candor to his work. He was respected and liked by his peers and customers alike for his work ethic, humor, and personality. As a Veteran, he had added credibility with his Military customer. His love for his family was evident, he kept pictures of his family on his desk, and we often talked about his family life from the day-to-day, to Florida vacations, to special events. He will be greatly missed and not forgotten. Sincerely, Sean Keith
